ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the intersectional diversity of the Latinx lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community and how to cover it accurately and fairly. This chapter focuses on the concepts of intersectionality and media representation of the traditionally underrepresented identity category of Latinx. News coverage of the Pulse Night Club mass shooting is utilized as a case study to examine the role of media and the importance of language and cultural context in journalism. The chapter includes an interview with Jorge Estevez, an anchor at WSB-TV Channel 2 Action News and an out Latinx journalist who covered Pulse.
