ABSTRACT

Started as a neighborhood community project associated with a school, this chapter describes the social innovation, successes, rapid growth, and challenges that Sadili Oval Sports Academy (located in Nairobi, Kenya) faces as a top sports facility serving children and their families from various economic levels, while continuing to commit to (original) immediate members. The chapter describes the value systems in which Sadili was born, which the community continues to embrace, and the need to strengthen social enterprise in order to sustain the necessary competitive standards as a leader in the region. Further, an argument is made for the use of carefully crafted health and local traditional practices combined with life skills into the daily sports training, and certification and environmental leadership of children and youths. Emphasis is laid on the importance of child protection and providing a platform for inclusion and empowerment of girls through the Girl Power Clubs, and the incorporation of survival, WASH, and environmental responsibility to sports training for children in the neighboring Kibera slums.
