ABSTRACT

Recent trends of competency-based educational reforms worldwide have redefined the role of English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers. EFL teachers are now responsible for preparing learners to meet the demands of a global world by offering contextualized instruction that connects English learning with real-world problems and tasks. However, many EFL teachers are unprepared for this new role because teacher education programs have not kept in step with the shifting landscape of language education. This chapter attempts to address this problem by reporting a competency-based approach to EFL teacher education. It begins by describing the context where the teacher education course was offered and outlining the process of designing the course curriculum, instruction, and assessment tasks. Next, it analyzes the impact of this course on pre-service teacher learning, including what pre-service teachers were able to accomplish and the areas for improvement. This chapter concludes with implications for future EFL teacher education practices.
