ABSTRACT

While the Hotel Welcome in Villefranche on the French Riviera might be read as both a workshop and stage for the artists who congregated there in the late 1920s, I propose a re-reading of the hotel as performance art—a multimedia and interdisciplinary event. Figures like Jean Cocteau and Mary Butts not only participate in but guide and record this performance. Set in the Welcome, Butts’s short story “The House Party” is examined here as both a site of performance and its remains.
