ABSTRACT

This lesson guides students through the process of preparing for and conducting a semi-structured interview in person, then reflecting on how they asked questions, and following up on the interviewees’ accounts. Through understanding the basic process involved in formulating an interview guide using open-ended questions, and activating the guide in a flexible way that supports interviewees to tell stories in their own words, students will be prepared to explore and practice alternative interview formats and theorizations (e.g., ethnographic, feminist interviewing) using a variety of modalities (i.e., synchronous online, telephone) with or without elicitation devices with individual, dyads, or groups. Students will reflect on their ability to ask open questions and follow up on interviewees’ accounts to elicit detailed descriptions pertaining to a research topic of interest.
