ABSTRACT

Digital storytelling (DST) is an innovative digital and visual participatory method that engages communities to address social inequality. In this hands-on lesson, students take on the role of “research participant” and learn to create their own digital stories, which are 1- to 3-minute video narratives that document personal experiences. Students will be introduced to the history of DST and key theoretical frameworks. After completing their own digital stories, the lesson will review data collection and analysis and discuss key ethical considerations when using this method.
