ABSTRACT

Sketch mapping is a low-cost and widely used tool. Using large pieces of paper, participants draw freehand a map of a specific place, relying on their memory and spatial knowledge of the area. Using a short lecture and a hands-on sketch-mapping exercise, this chapter helps students understand what sketch mapping is and how it can be used as a research method, understand how the map reflects the values and identity of the mapmaker(s), and develop an understanding of the place they live in and those who share it.
