ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we explore how to create visual variables; this is the first step in doing a systematic analysis of nonverbal, videotaped data. By visualizing and coding videotaped moments of life we can analyze actions and social interactions in interesting and productive ways. This method has been popular with linguists as well as primatologists over the years, but is also valuable for the ethnographic process, depending on the questions being asked.
