ABSTRACT
Coding data are often assumed to be a natural process that everyone inherently knows how to do. But understanding different units of data and how to code is an essential skill to be taught. This chapter explains how to teach the different ways of coding, including structurally and thematically, and whether it should and can be at the word, sentence, segment, or paragraph level of text.
