ABSTRACT

This lesson introduces students to corpus linguistics. As corpus methods are so wide and comprehensive, here the focus is on one constituent, concordancing, which can be harnessed for language observation. The students practice first with printed concordance lines and reflect on the possibilities of using the method as part of a broader linguistic ethnography. In the second session, they are given a step-by-step guide to hands-on interface-concordancing. They then log on to the corpus linguistic interface themselves and use the concordancer. Scaffolding at this stage is provided by the teacher either in a normal classroom environment or in online breakout rooms.
