ABSTRACT

This study aims to provide a reporting tool that allows sporting event organizers who follow the ISO20121 standard to link the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) disclosures with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) targets. The XXI edition of the Commonwealth Games or Gold Coast 2018 was delivered following the standard ISO20121, which provides the requirements for an event sustainability management system. Given the exploratory nature of our study, we opted for a qualitative method, analyzing the sustainability reports of Gold Coast 2018 which have followed the ISO20121 for sustainable event organization and the GRI guidelines for reporting. After analyzing the sustainability reports of Gold Coast 2018, we noticed that the event had a significant impact in reaching SDG 11’s targets under 11.2, 11.3, 11.4, 11.6, and 11.7. These impacts have been reported throughout the GRI disclosures within the sustainability reports, however, when the publications allude to the SDGs met by the event, number 11 is not included. We believe this is not enough, because we think it is necessary to provide a specific reference on where the information relating to SDGs is reported.
