ABSTRACT

This chapter is a case study that examines secondary level English language teacher training at the Institut Supérieur Pédagogique de Bukavu. Situated in the République Démocratique du Congo, also referred to as Congo-Kinshasa, DR Congo, this immense central African country is the second largest country in Africa and eleventh largest in the world. With a long history of wars, political and civil unrest, a rich mosaic of cultures, and a diverse geography, there are significant challenges facing educators in the DR Congo. Current educational reforms have been made in an attempt to keep children for longer in compulsory schooling, that is, up to Grade 8 (approximately 13–15 years of age). The program under examination in this chapter prepares teacher candidates to teach English in secondary schools. Using a wide variety of data including academic and administrative records and resources, interviews, and anecdotal records, the authors discuss the possibilities, challenges, and future directions for the preparation of English language teachers who work with young adolescents.
