ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses bi/multilingual education and the COVID-19 pandemic and provides themes of the impact of the pandemic across diverse language education contexts. The chapter introduces a summary of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on educational systems globally followed by a discussion on global language education contexts and responses to COVID-19. The rest of the chapter discusses three themes found across language education contexts: a) transition to distance learning, b) issues of equity and disparities, and c) unique impact on key stakeholders. Given the nascent and burgeoning research on this topic, a central aim of the chapter is to provide diverse perspectives on the issue from scholarship written in different languages from diverse publishing outlets including government documents, research articles, news and media articles, and blogs/social media. The end of the chapter provides a final commentary on the possible lasting impacts of COVID-19 on bi/multilingual education.
