ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses two major prongs in comics studies in a greater discussion of the idea of comics for children across cultures. What a comic is and does, and why comics and graphic novels are essentially the same thing, establish a foundation for the discussion. From there, the idea of comics in multiple forms from a variety of cultures and periods is traced from Europe and Asia to the Americas. While the chapter cannot discuss all the different cultures of children’s comics, it offers a starting point for a larger discussion with a call to facilitate future scholarship.
