ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses children’s literature websites, particularly in terms of engagement, commodification, and dual audiences, as well as children’s experiences of literary fandoms. In many cases, both websites and fannish activities are tied to education and designed to be mediated by adults; while there are some sites that encourage independent play, most do not provide opportunities to connect with other readers or develop digital literacy. In addition, this chapter explores how podcasts, YouTube, and social media such as Discord may offer children more direct opportunities to engage with literature than some sites designed for that purpose.
