ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the twenty-first-century publishing landscapes in the People’s Republic of China, Japan, and India. The publishing industries in the three countries share similarities in their focus on book series for children, which reflects global market trends as well as research into children’s positive response to such books. However, each country’s unique sociopolitical context poses different challenges for publishers. Using several case studies, this chapter examines key forces driving the children’s book industry in these areas, considers the relationship between publishers and literary festivals and book fairs, and discusses how globalization has influenced children’s publishing.
