ABSTRACT

The tunnels crossing major cities have altered the behavior and movements of inhabitants over the last 150 years; the novel by Dostoevsky changed the narration, shifting from a focus on the setting of the experience of the protagonist to an inner dimension. A protagonist that uses the underground as a metaphor, the image of digging into the human spirit, the unconscious, is what Jung defines as the “basements” of the soul. Extensive scientific literature exists regarding the appearance of problems of eyesight, migraines, fatigue and conditions of stress in people who spend much of their time in underground work facilities: the main causes are humidity, lack of natural light, lack of air or sufficient air quality, accompanied by symptoms of fatigue that promptly arise due to lower levels of melatonin and cortisol.
