ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book examines the place of Marxist theory in the history of the journal Educational Philosophy&Theory. It illustrates the evolution of Marxist thought in the field and journal primarily through the selection and exploration of typical and significant articles exploring Marxist-related themes in the journal over time. The book examines the history of Marxism in western philosophy and western philosophy of education. It explores the influence and evolution of western Marxism particularly in relation to Hegelian, Freirean, and Heideggerian thought, and its impact on philosophy of education, the journal Educational Philosophy and Theory, and on related scholarship in Australia and New Zealand and around the world. The book provides a rough typology of western Marxism, followed by an overview of the works selected from journal which are included in this collection that further illustrate the evolution of Marxist theoretical perspectives in the field.
