ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the characteristics, affordances, and constraints of case study research in pursuing possibilities for social justice through qualitative research. First, definitions are developed by tracing a line through the historical roots and disciplinary routes in the development of case study research. Next, strategies for data collection and analysis are presented in concert with questions of methods or “how to” conduct a case study. Finally, the chapter delves further into questions of how qualitative case study research may change the world, grounded in the example of the documentary film One Day on Earth. Through its crowdsourcing approach to documentary filmmaking, One Day on Earth served to record the mundane aspects of everyday life and aimed to provide a catalyst for activism and call attention to many global social justice issues. Case study research is more than a way to document the world; case study research can change the world.
