ABSTRACT

The inclusion of commercial and popular music across the higher education landscape continues to gain momentum in contemporary culture. Although the inclusion of commercial music and popular music in higher education throughout the US has gained momentum, its inclusion in music education, and specifically in music teacher education, has been slow and arduous. LKR has expanded its focus to offer similar experiences for prospective music teachers in undergraduate music teacher education programs and provides a variety of fellowships for those interested in teaching popular music in higher education. In addition to expanding curriculum and audition requirements in music teacher education programs across the US, this chapter highlights that a key area for consideration, one needing further investigation and inquiry, is pedagogy. The purpose of this book is to provide needed guidance, ideas, and support for faculty interested in exploring new notions of musicianship and pedagogy in higher education.
