ABSTRACT

This chapter is titled Transitions, and it is about why and how women in behavior science transition within higher education and even between professional fields. This chapter assumes that most women will transition in their careers at some point, so its focus is not on the choice to transition but the reasons why we may transition and how to make a transition “successful.” By writing this chapter, we hope to accomplish four objectives: 1) describe insights into the work lives of women and especially women of color; 2) discuss some considerations we have used when deciding how to transition; 3) share our personal stories of transitioning in higher education; and 4) give practical recommendations for those who are transitioning. The authors of this chapter are a group of women from diverse backgrounds who represent a range of experiences in higher education. By sharing our stories of transitioning in higher education, we hope that our experiences can serve as a source of encouragement and support for women making career choices in behavior science.
