ABSTRACT

Searching for an academic job can be a stressful endeavor. This process may start as a graduate student or postdoctoral scholar, and it may repeat itself later in your career when seeking different opportunities for professional growth. In this chapter, we will share our perspectives and advice related to various aspects of the job search. Given our different career paths, we will offer multiple perspectives on how to navigate the job-search process, explore available resources, describe how to overcome potential challenges, and consider a variety of academic positions. Someone looking for academic jobs may have many questions, such as: when should I begin looking for jobs? where should I look? what should I look for? In this chapter, we will address these and other questions, emphasizing the importance of a strong network of mentors, evaluating your fit with the prospective department and institution, assessing how the jobs available align with your professional goals, and exploring available resources within the institutions. We will also discuss the high degree of variability in time-allocation expectations across university positions with similar job titles, identify the expectations of the faculty role, and offer some advice on negotiating your start-up package.
