ABSTRACT

In this series of poetic prose vignettes, the speaker recounts the food and drinks she has shared with various women over the years: women whose names she may have forgotten, but who remain vivid in the flavours, sensations, smells, and textures they evoke. Though each vignette’s title is a particular food or drink – suggestive of a culinary glossary – any definitions contained within the narratives remain intimate and personal. By (re)collecting each of her “girlfriends” according to her food memories, the speaker reveals the power such associations have to obscure certain details even as they bring the substance of our past into sharp relief.
