ABSTRACT

My work is influenced by the expectations of masculinity and the restrictive nature of stereotypes within gay culture, which promotes a standard of perfection that excludes many men. My intention is to play off the idea of a “thirst trap.” To view internalized labels as the masks I wear and their influence on how I see myself, am seen by others, especially in the context of social media and dating (hook-up) apps, and how this shapes my experiences with my health, body, and food. My goal for this piece is to go beyond #labels that define and limit us; to move from a place of shame towards authenticity and vulnerability.
