ABSTRACT

Organizational structure or design is a phenomenon that receives a significant amount of attention from managers as they seek to organize their staff and volunteers to optimize their impact on organizational performance and meet their strategic goals. Rather than replicate the myriad of existing material on this topic, this chapter highlights the unique aspects of the design of sport organizations. Consequently, this chapter reviews the key concepts of organizational design, provides examples of the unique features of sport organization designs, and summarizes the key research findings on the structure of sport organizations. The chapter also provides a summary of principles for managing organizational designs within community, state, national, and professional sport organizations.
