ABSTRACT

There is growing market globalisation in the new global economy. Entrepreneurship has given the critical fillip for this development anchored on internationalisation strategy. Enterprises and entrepreneurs in emerging economies like South Africa have leveraged internationalisation activities to exploit untapped opportunities in the rapidly evolving global economy. International entrepreneurship mediates the challenging international business environment by propelling these enterprises and entrepreneurs into international markets while unlocking economic growth in the home country. This is important for a country like South Africa grappling with the development conundrum of poverty, unemployment, and inequalities stemming from its colonial legacy. This chapter presents and analyses cross-sectional survey data from 72 SMEs operating in different sectors of the South African economy to understand the role played by international entrepreneurial orientation with a specific focus on international entrepreneurial decision-making and vision, and motivations towards international entrepreneurship of the SMEs in their international trade.
