ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book describes the most useful, actionable, and evidence-based solutions to many of the most pressing questions in the criminal justice system today. It outlines the practical reasons for agencies and practitioners to implement evidence-based practices and invest in research and evaluation. The book then provides recommendations for reducing the reliance on ineffective and/or unfair programs, policies, and practices and decreasing the potential unintended consequences associated with practices that cannot be eliminated completely (e.g., incarceration). It also explores the practices and overall efficacy of crime prevention initiatives that address critical risk factors for offending. These topics will include multi-component evidence-based strategies that aim to address crime in the community and/or within the justice system. The book focuses on formative contexts for prevention and intervention, including the home, school, community, out-of-home placements, and the juvenile justice system itself.
