ABSTRACT

In many higher education structures, governing bodies and administrative teams are responsible for planning and facilitating system-wide institutional change. This chapter reviews practical, shared, institutional strategies at several levels (individual, department institution) that encourage and provide leadership development pathways for women. For women who wish to advance into leadership roles, the strategies and models reviewed in this chapter will help readers better understand the challenges administrators face as leaders, and it will give women new, constructive views on how to facilitate career advancement within an institution’s organizational hierarchy. For women already in leadership roles, becoming familiar with these strategies may assist them in advocating for future changes for themselves and in their institutions. The authors draw from the experiences of current leaders, recent research, and professional associations to develop timely guidance for women aspiring to leadership positions in higher education.
