ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes the morbidity and mortality resulting from COVID-19 and the response of the Mexican health system to the pandemic among Indigenous populations. It presents an overview of the main challenges faced by the Indigenous population in their struggle against COVID-19 and the public policy framework that has been designed to address the pandemic among them. The analysis of morbidity and mortality shows the social and health gaps and inequities that affect this sector of society. The second section of the document presents a detailed analysis of the response to care for Indigenous Peoples within the recent reforms to the health system. The chapter concludes with specific recommendations to improve the Mexican health system’s response to Indigenous populations in the face of the COVID-19 and future pandemics.
