ABSTRACT

The Igbo, Indigenous People located in southeast Nigeria, have a unique way of perceiving health issues, following their age-long traditional health system, which has become diverse over time. The COVID-19 pandemic has put to the test the age-long traditional health system and public health practices among the population. This chapter discusses infectious disease management in the public health domain among the Igbo and the accompanying challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using a Diffusion Innovation Theoretical approach, the study was carried out in geographical areas including the southern Igbo, the northern Igbo, western Igbo, eastern Igbo, and northeast Igbo. The study utilized a qualitative study design in gathering data and applied thematic analysis for data analysis. The findings show that infectious diseases are seen as a multi-dimensional phenomenon among the Igbo, while the COVID-19 pandemic had multi-dimensional socio-economic impacts on the population.
