ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we review social events that occurred during 2020 from various ethical perspectives. Many of these events will continue to reverberate in society throughout the decade. We are writing for people who, when they find themselves in unsettling situations (e.g., injustice, racial prejudice, etc.), want to “do the right thing.” Often the first question is “where do I begin?” We wonder about what to say and/or do that will provide a fitting response and also allow us to be able to live at ease with ourselves and the choices we have made. We will provide a brief overview of multiple theoretical approaches to communication ethics representing various social “goods” and show how those approaches emphasize different places to begin when seeking to communicate ethically within a given social situation, which is situated within a broader a historical context.
