ABSTRACT
This chapter will outline the importance and key challenges in piloting test items and tasks prior to a live (operational) test administration. It will discuss the relevance of pre-operational testing for ensuring valid and reliable language tests and locate it within the test development cycle as well as validation frameworks. The chapter will also highlight some useful methods for researching and analyzing prototype tasks and pilot items. It will conclude with recommendations for good practice.
