ABSTRACT

Adulthood is not a static situation, and throughout life, different concerns and issues develop around treating the long-term sequalae of early trauma, mental health, and substance use disorders. Older adults are the fastest growing population in the US, but their unique treatment needs have only just become something to consider by those in the mental health and addiction counseling fields. Some older adults are not interested in mental health and substance treatment and will seek pharmaceutical approaches through their medical doctors unless mandated to treatment for co-occurring disorders. Others may be willing to engage in psychotherapy and recovery treatment if it is integrated and developed around the unique issues facing this population. This chapter considers the needs of this often-forgotten population for integrated treatment.
