ABSTRACT

Megachurches present a distinctive opportunity to study and make sense of the social and religious contexts of populations particularly in modern society. Megachurches, while unique in certain regards, often have similar identifiable patterns of organization and leadership dynamics that sometimes raise complex and complicated challenges. This chapter attempts to identify and discuss some major controversies, scandals, and crises encountered by megachurches as they organize and lead their large congregations, using case studies from Asia, Africa, and the United States, where many of the largest megachurches are located.
