ABSTRACT

Megachurches have been noted for their strong association with urban environments. This chapter looks at the many determinants for megachurch location in varied urban environments such as city centers, mega-shopping malls, residential neighborhoods, suburban towns, industrial estates, and even peri-urban locales around the world. I discuss state patronage, urban regulations, social class mobilities, ethno-racial politics, the property market, and, most importantly, spiritual worldviews as important determinants. The combination of these make up megachurch urbanisms that define a megachurch's interaction and engagement with its urban environment. I show that an important dimension of these urbanisms is Christian imaginaries of space.
