ABSTRACT

Demographic transitions stages have always played a critical role in the transformation of all social institutions, be they family, education, economic, health care–based, civic movements, religious movements, even religious institutions. The case is no different for the growth of churches that grow to mega size. In the present historical moment, there are strong correlations between the current shape and stages of the demographic transition models around the world, with churches that are presently flourishing into mega size. Using the ethnographic imagination, which employs biography, social history, and some comparative data, this chapter will consider how the demographic transition model might explain the numerical outlook of megachurches around the world.
