ABSTRACT

Modern research has made evident how important the political position of Archbishop Liemar of Bremen was as causa scribendi behind Adam of Bremen’s Gesta. This chapter elaborates further on Adam’s work in relation to the role of Archbishop Liemar in the political conflicts of the 1070s. It shows how these conflicts influenced the picture Adam chooses to give about the Scandinavian North, where he very clearly characterizes who were the Archbishop’s’ heroes and who were his foes.
