ABSTRACT

The guest editors of this special issue provide the following comments in reflecting on the major themes that are envisioned for travel and tourism in a COVID-19 world. Through exploiting the tourism toolbox, the Zapatista Movement and linked communities have generated benefits to the residents in the communities. These varied dimensions of transactions of modes and practices have consequences for our understanding of sustainable-oriented, sociocultural, and political development. On a different note but still linked to travel and inequality, while air travel is condemned, during the pandemic more and more people are travelling by car, which is considered the “safest” means of transport, when compared to crowded trains and buses. On the issue of global-local views, COVID-19 is a critical moment on the pathway to implementing some form of globalization.
