ABSTRACT

The contentious 2019 presidential election in Bolivia set in motion a paradoxical political rupture. Amid credible accusations of electoral irregularities, a swell of popular protests led to the removal of President Evo Morales from office. But after a brief, opposition-dominated interim government led by Jeanine Áñez, new elections reinstalled the Movement toward Socialism (MAS) party, albeit without its historic strongman. Although the Evo Morales era seems to have ended, MAS remains the dominant force in Bolivian politics. Thus, Bolivia is undergoing a transition of sorts, but one marked by significant continuity.
