ABSTRACT

This chapter provides guidance for approaches to teaching histories regarded as controversial or sensitive. It explores why beginning teachers find teaching controversial and sensitive issues in history challenging and outlines some principles mentors can introduce to help their mentee navigate this aspect of their teaching. It suggests resources that can be used to support beginning teachers to develop a clearer grasp of what makes an issue in history controversial, and what strategies might be deployed to teach these issues in an appropriate and historically rigorous manner. The chapter will also consider how approaches to teaching controversial and sensitive histories can benefit from the perspectives of beginning teachers. Additionally, it will explore how beginning teachers can draw on their own recent experiences of historical scholarship to develop a more representative and inclusive history curriculum.
