ABSTRACT

This chapter draws on the author’s own experience of moving between different countries and encountering the differences in educational provision and ethos. Based on the difference between the UK and Germany, the author reflects on her transition from a native professional educator in higher education in one to becoming a migrant student in the new country. The reflection upon these transient experiences provides the basis for making sense of a specific debate in the area of German theorising about education and, more importantly, the justification to educate. The discussion of this normativity problem allows the author to reveal specific differences within the cultural field in which educational systems are situated. It allows for the conclusion that cross-cultural knowledge must be an important aspect of any education aimed at anyone wanting to work in education in the future.
