ABSTRACT

The increase in demand for Halal products at the local level as well as expansion in the export and import business of Halal products to Muslim and non-Muslim countries have led to a growth of demand for Halal logistics The shift from conventional logistics to Halal logistics, particularly in Halal transportation and warehousing, is an innovative approach of supply chain activity. A key aspect of Halal logistics in supply chain activities is that the core activities throughout the supply chain should be compliant and aligned with Shariah requirements or Halal standard guidelines. This is significant to ensure that there will be no issue of contamination along the process of the supply chain. This chapter aims to provide a detailed discussion on the importance of Halal logistics and supply chain standards. The discussion will cover three regions namely the West, Asia and the Middle East. A brief overview of the international logistics and supply chain standards (IHIAS, SMIIC and MS) is also offered, followed by an example of centres for Halal certification in certain countries in the selected regions. Future research opportunities on Halal supply chain, certification, guidelines and standards are also discussed at the end of the chapter.
