ABSTRACT

The chapter describes the developments in the Hungarian class structure, focusing on the elite, the middle class, the working class, and the precariat in the recent decades. The major process undergone was an increasing polarisation combined with a growing heterogeneity. The elite became more distanced upwards, the precariat became more detached downwards from the rest of society. The middle class also sank and its composition became very fragmented. The working class is also very diverse in terms of its working and material conditions. Financial and social capital seem to play a particularly strong role in these developments in Hungary.
