ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author believes that the SENCO role is entering a new season of being redefined, and wellbeing has to be part of the intentional dialogue going forward. The 2008 Foresight study created a framework for wellbeing that connected five tangible actions to good functioning, including connecting people, being active, taking notice, continuous learning and giving. Visually connected, this is what emerges from the radial scheme of good functioning, in-between enhanced mental capacity and wholesome wellbeing. Initially SENCO wellbeing revolved around these five concepts, which map onto three fundamental structures: people, purpose and place. Being a SENCO is not an easy role, but it is a phenomenally rewarding one and it isn't about paperwork. Being a SENCO is about enablement.
