ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on a tour of Inclusion Ville visiting seven SENCOs in situ, and looks at SENCO identity from three perspectives: as an individual, a teacher and a leader. The SENCOs need to think creatively about how they continue to lead provision for special educational needs and disability. It is an exciting time within the education service at Inclusion Ville, as the mayor is about to announce a new initiative that will benefit the children and young people of the city. Edward is the most experienced SENCO in Inclusion Ville. In England, all appointed SENCOs are first and foremost required to be qualified teachers. This is a good thing, as it means SENCOs operate from a place of sound pedagogical practice, curriculum knowledge and child development. An identity statement is an affirmation i.e., it is the act of confirming something to be true or is a written or oral statement that confirms something is true.
