ABSTRACT

This chapter explores emotions and how one can look to retain the moments of joy in the job, and how job satisfaction can come from being aligned with purpose (internal) and doesn't have to be about procedure or actions and doesn't have to be dependent on others. Self is always reacting with 'others' and also with the 'service', with this being 'the service of providing education'. Joy is an emotion, as well as an outcome. Within the SENCO role everyone need to be able to notice, feel and respond to their emotions. Regular, high-quality supervision, by someone not directly line managing enables SENCOs to vent safely and with purpose. The result will be outcomes that support and enhance SENCO wellbeing and development. Supervision is also a productive space to share moments of joy to explore the connection between core values, purpose and the actions that create a sense of fulfillment.
