ABSTRACT

In this chapter a personal narrative account is provided in the desire that PE professionals will make meaning from the author’s experiences of promoting Western sport and PE philosophy in China, which will in turn help them in their own pursuits in this developing market. Hofstede’s cultural comparison framework is utilized to shape personal accounts and place the lived experiences in theoretical context. The author’s own journey of cultural awareness and ongoing reflection provides interesting vignettes which can serve as important lessons for the future. Ignorance stemming from the difficulty in gaining access to knowledge of the Chinese education and sports systems has been replaced by first-hand experiences of teaching and a realization that the present Western philosophy of PE that is being promoted is actually a reincarnation of core Chinese teachings but with both systems growing closer every year.
