ABSTRACT

I first came across schemas when my daughter, Georgia, was in nursery. At the time, Georgia was enjoying a lot of pram pushing and baby games. I'd had my son, Harry, a few months earlier and was myself doing a lot of pram pushing and baby games, which, of course, Georgia was witness to. When the nursery practitioner said to me that Georgia had a transporting and enveloping schema, I think I smiled and nodded and secretly thought, ‘no, she hasn't – she's copying me’. I was a real sceptic to begin with. However, over time, and with lots more examples from nursery that evidenced Georgia's repeated actions of enveloping and transporting with things that she was not doing or seeing at home, I began to change my mind.
