ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the prevalence of problematic information in the context of the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union (commonly referred to as Brexit). Specifically, it considers three claims made during the EU referendum campaigns: that the United Kingdom sent £350 million a week to the EU when it was a member, that Turkey would be joining the EU imminently, and that migrants were overwhelming the UK because of the EU’s migration policies (via the infamous “Breaking Point” poster). It also examines the phenomenon of Euromyths and their characterisation as disinformation. Via a case study of disinformation and a Euromyth in articles published around the time of the EU membership referendum of 2016, the chapter illustrates that disinformation was repeated and (re)produced in the British pro-Brexit press.
