ABSTRACT

The production and distribution of fake news and mis- and disinformation have created additional challenges for journalists and fact checkers who daily examine the veracity of information from different sources. This chapter outlines what digital source criticism is and how it can be used when assessing claims in general and specifically within journalism, such as investigative journalism and fact-checking. Source criticism has developed in several directions and the concept has different meanings across cultural and disciplinary contexts. Citizens, organisations, institutions, and particularly journalists need to be able to identify and determine the trustworthiness of different information sources. Technology might impact how a source or a piece of information is presented, amplified, or hidden. The ease of manipulating information and spreading it to a global audience requires new methods and approaches for examining digital sources and information. Digital information and sources must be understood in the specific context they appear in, as well as the technological context.
